The city clerk informed the commission that they don’t have the ability to create subcommittees, which the commission previously voted to create. Instead, he said, the commission has to request this ability from the City Council and mayor, or the commission can use working groups, which are not subject to Open Meeting Law. Several commissioners said they saw this as the city creating a barrier to their progress.
Commissioner Gurian Sherman made a motion to voluntarily make the commission’s working groups comply with Open Meeting Law. This motion failed after a 5-5 vote. Several commissioners voiced support for making working groups fully accessible to public in the spirit of transparency Several commissioners expressed concern with public involvement hampering productivity and over burdening commissioners’ time
Nine members of the public gave public comment. Most shared various frustrations with the commission’s progress and dismay with the city’s involvement.
