The school board:

  • Heard from the public, mainly about class sizes too large at the elementary schools.
  • Received a preliminary audit report with the auditor saying there were no major problems with the school’s finances.
  • Set the tax levy at a 12.59 percent increase, the maximum allowed by law.
  • Heard from the district’s lobbyist a grim report on future education legislation. He said that at the federal level, with the Republicans controlling all three branches, there will likely be cuts in education. At the state level, there may be gridlock in the legislature, plus a looming state deficit.
  • Listened to a second reading of the school calendars for the next three years, which showed that there will be four religious holidays in the next year, and two each the following two years. The calendars will be approved in January.
  • Sold the Tuttle School to developers for $1.5 million. It will be used for housing.
  • Paid tribute to Ira Jourdain for his eight years of service to the board.

The Minneapolis Board of Education, or School Board, is the elected body responsible for governing finances and policies, establishing and monitoring the strategic direction and goals, and hiring and evaluating the district’s superintendent, who serves as the district’s chief executive.

The School Board is comprised of nine directors, elected by Minneapolis voters, and two student representatives who are appointed. The superintendent also serves as an ex-officio member of the board. Board members serve four-year terms, beginning in January after being elected in November. Each year in January, the school board selects its leadership, which includes a chair, vice-chair, clerk, and treasurer.
