  • The committee held a preliminary discussion on a new gender inclusion policy that would protect transgender students. The committee looked at an existing policy from St. Paul and Minnesota School Board Association guidelines. Staff will develop a draft policy and present it to the committee probably at the March meeting.
  • The committee approved and sent to the full board a revised policy on graduation requirements that aligns with state law.
    • Last year, the state Legislature approved requiring that high school students must complete personal finance and civics courses to graduate. All high schools are now also required to offer an ethnic studies course.
    • The MPS policy aligns with those changes, and also adds that students must pass the ethnic studies course and have a personal plan for post-secondary education or employment.
