  • The committee heard a presentation on a new Equity and Diversity Impact Assessment on School Transportation. The study found that communication between the bus transportation system and parents was sorely lacking and that students who use Metro Transit for bus service have strong safety concerns.
    • Most concerns came from families of color, who “mentioned safety and climate concerns,” according to the report. In addition, some parents said they feel they and their child have been discriminated against in “bus incidents.” In 2023, 101 African American students and 12 Native American students were involved in “bus incidents” compared to 12 white students.
    • The full board will review the EDIA in April.
  • The committee reviewed Policy 5635 (Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect) and Policy 5637 (Mandated Reporting of Treatment for Vulnerable Adults) and made no comment.
  • The committee reviewed a new policy on gender inclusion that includes provisions for bathrooms, locker rooms and sports teams. They did not take any action.

The Minneapolis Board of Education, or School Board, is the elected body responsible for governing finances and policies, establishing and monitoring the strategic direction and goals, and hiring and evaluating the district’s superintendent, who serves as the district’s chief executive.

The School Board is comprised of nine directors, elected by Minneapolis voters, and two student representatives who are appointed. The superintendent also serves as an ex-officio member of the board. Board members serve four-year terms, beginning in January after being elected in November. Each year in January, the school board selects its leadership, which includes a chair, vice-chair, clerk, and treasurer.
